Regaining his credibility with the survey manager, General William J. Palmer, Calhoun went on to prove he was an astute and articulate recorder of events and people encountered in the post-Civil War Desert West.
The book is edited and annotated by John N. Marnell with a foreword by Dennis Casebier.
