Fire Truck for the Goffs Schoolhouse
Eureka! We have a fire truck! It's a 1974 bright yellow American La France pumper with tanks that hold about 500 gallons of water. It has a big diesel engine that used only a quarter of a tank of fuel getting here from Las Vegas. Everything on the truck seems to work, including the pumps.
The fire truck was procured for us at a recent Clark County, Nevada, auction. It was kept in Las Vegas for a couple of weeks undergoing repairs and upgrades. On Saturday 23 November 2002 it was driven to Goffs under its own power. We've been looking for a fire truck for a long time. The nearest fire station in Needles is 33 miles away and 2,000 feet lower in elevation. It would probably take at least one hour to get a truck here in an emergency, and by then it might be too late.
The fire truck is temporarily parked under the Flywheel Cafe but will have a special Fire Truck Port built for it. It cannot yet be considered "on line" as we don't completely know how to use it and we are missing a few parts.
We are deeply indebted to Carl and Eleanor Volkmar for this valuable addition to the tools we have to work with to ensure the permanency of our accomplishments at Goffs. Attendees present at this affair included: Chris Ervin, Hugh Brown, Bruce & Mary Nicholson, Bob & Dorothy Beal, Dale & Carol McBride, and Dennis & Jo Ann Casebier.
